WILSON Family History
This is an English patronymic name which means 'son of Will'. The root 'wil' is an Old Germanic word which originally meant 'desire for power or conquest'.
Early bearers of the surname include: Robert Willeson, who appears in the 1324 Wakefield Court Rolls, Yorkshire; Robert Wilson, who appears in the 1341 Kirkstall Coucher Book, Yorkshire; John Willison, who appears in the 1366 Lancashire Subsidy Rolls; and Hugo Wyllesone, who appears in the 1377 Staffordshire Poll Tax.
Several references to the surname are seen on early Scottish records, including a Michael Wilsoun who was burgess of Irvine in 1418; a John Wilson who was burgess of Berwick in 1467; and Thomas Wolsoun who was the tenant of Neubotel Abbey in 1563. During the 19th century the surname was particularly numerous in the region south of the Forth and the Clyde.
In Wales, the surname is far less widespread, but there are some references to it on early 17th century parish registers, mainly in areas close the English border, including parts of Montgomeryshire and Monmouthshire.
In 1881, the surname was widespread and particularly frequent in the southern English county of Kent with 2,692 occurrences. The most popular occupations recorded at the time for Wilson family members included farming, coal mining and labouring.
In 1891, there were 107,942 occurrences of the surname in England and Wales as a whole, and a further 30,528 in Scotland.
Today, there are approximately 1,477,415 Wilson family members around the world. It is estimated that the largest group live in the USA with 1,014,419 members, followed by England with 195,933, Canada with 82,770, Australia with 77,643, Scotland with 43,437, South Africa with 33,852, Ireland with 15,238, New Zealand with 8,048, and Wales with 6,075.

Lorne Wilson
My widowed great-great-great-great-great-grandmother Margaret departed from Armagh Ireland in June 1836 and arrived in Saint John, New Brunswick with 4 children. Martha, Thomas (my grandfather....), John and Sarah. They settled in the Kennebecasis Valley between Saint John and Moncton NB. The village of Norton was the new home for the Wilson's. Thomas begat John who begat George who begat Lorne who begat Robert who begat me, Lorne. I have two daughters, Caitlin and Alexandra.

I am Lorne K. Wilson, born Fredericton NB, Canada, son of Robert G. Wilson, son of Lorne A. Wilson, son of George Wilson, son of John Wilson, son of Thomas Wilson, son of Mary Wilson. Mary immigrated from Armagh area as a widow with four children in tow to St. John NB and settled in the Norton area of New Brunswick (between Moncton and St. John NB) in the year 1834. Hi there, I too am researching Wilson's who came to Canada from Armagh in 1816. The were part of a military settlement in Bathurst Ontario-/ now Lanark. James the elder, born 1761 and his son James, born 1791, arrived on the ship Alexander with three women--- Libby? Mary and Jane. An unrelated boy also came with their group. So I am wondering if you know much about Wilson's in that area? There could be a relationship ?

According to a genealgy written in the around the 1950s, my great, great, great grandfather Captain Roland Wilson (British soldier) m Deborah Molyneaux. Children Elizabeth Agnes, Jane, Robert, Mulnix, and William b 7/31/1829 d Apr 4, 1903 in Canada, with 2nd wife Margaret Campbell. Roland was reported to have lived in or near Kiltegan, County Wicklow, Ireland.

My name is Sally and I am looking for James Wilson. Actually the first Wilson in Ireland of our family came from Scotland about 1590 or so. I have a letter from a relative who says that in 1600 the Wilson in Ireland lost all three sons to drowning in the well on the farm in County Longford – just south of County Cavan. His first name is not known but the letter said that after those deaths, he moved north to County Cavan. Clearly the family remained in County Cavan for over 200 years.
The earliest documented Wilson was John Wilson who was born about 1760 in County Cavan, Ireland. He had two sons - including William Wilson who was born in County Cavan, Ireland in 1790. He married Esther Coote (also from County Cavan) and they had 7 of their children born in Ireland. The nine of them then they made their way to Canada from Ireland – quite a trip. That was about 1840. (Their last child born in Ireland was born in October of 1839 and their next child was born in Ontario in 1843.)
William and Esther settled in Cobourg, Ontario and then commenced to have 5 more kids – for a total of 12

Alexander Wilson was brought up somewhere in the parish of Redrock,
Market Hill, Armagh and it would seem that he married sometime between
1840-50. He and his wife set up home in a small farm in the town land of Lisbane, Armagh (this farm is now owned by the Carmichael family). He also had a leather business and manufactured boots at the lower end of Thomas Street, Armagh. Alexander Wilson and his wife, Margaret, had six of a family, William, James, Alexander, Margaret, Eliza and Joseph.

James Wilson, farmer and stock-raiser, Le Claire, Iowa, was born in Donegal, Ireland, in 1825, and came to the United States in 1855 and located in Le Claire Township, where he has followed farming since. In 1849 married Jane Galligher; she was born in Ireland. There was a family of 13 children, nine of whom are living, viz.: William, Susan, Nathaniel, Thomas, Sarah J., Andrew, John, Margaret and Mary E. Mrs. Wilson died in 1872. She was a member of Seceeders church. Mr. Wilson has 320 acres of land valued at $75 per acre in Le Claire Township, and 160 acres in Poweshick Co., Iowa, valued at $35.
