Crabtree Family HistoryThis interesting surname is of Anglo Saxon origin, and is topographical for one who dwelled by a wild apple tree. The name derives from the Olde English pre 7th Century "crabba-treow" meaning a crab(apple) tree. Topographical surnames, such as this, were among the earliest created, since both natural and man-made features in the landscape provided easily recognisable distinguishing names in the small communities of the Middle Ages. The surname was first recorded at the beginning of the 14th Century (see below), and one John Crabtree appears in the Poll Tax Returns Records of Yorkshire, dated 1379.
